Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #546
Hey there. And, welcome to the flash briefing for Sunday. Thanks for tuning in. It’s Teri here, and on Sundays, I like to answer questions from the community. And, today I’ve got a question that’s very Canadian.
And, it’s all about bilingualism and basically the question is, “Why is Alexa not able to speak both languages at the same time?” So if you don’t know, you can set up your language in Alexa in the settings.
You can, of course, have her speak English, the English Canadian version, or you can also have her speak French, the French Canadian version. But the question really centers around why can’t Alexa speak both at the same time?
And, I had a discussion with somebody inside Amazon, and I asked them this question, and they said, “Well, the truth is, it’s actually quite complicated to do that, because when you start to have a device that can speak two languages at the same time, the whole language model, and the way those two languages, and the way they translate words back and forth, have to be able to be set up and programmed to do so.
It’s actually quite a complicated process.

It’s… so, it’s actually quite a complicated process. I was thinking, “Well, why isn’t this happening? Cause you just… if it can speak English, and it can speak French, just to do it.”
But, anyway, the answer is technically it can be done, but it takes a lot of resources, and it takes a lot of work to be able to have the two language models work seamlessly together.
So, likely this is on the roadmap for some point in the future. When? Don’t know. So for now, you’re gonna have to stick to choosing one; English or French.
And we’ll keep our fingers crossed that true bilingualism for Alexa will come sometime soon. Talk to you tomorrow.
