Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #213
So I picked up some new smart home hardware that is perfectly compatible with Alexa and I want to tell you about it. I picked up some of the Philips Hue multicolored light bulbs, and as you know, I have been using the TP-Link switches and I have a couple of light bulbs as well, and I still love those.
I still think as far as replacing out lights in your home, if you can actually replace the switch with a smart switch, I think that actually gives you the best control because even when you turn off the power on the switch, the switch still has electricity going to it and so it stays live and you can always control it.
Whereas, if you just replace the light bulbs and you turn off the switch on the wall, now there’s no power going to the light bulb. And when you turn it on, it’s basically reset to normal light bulb color. So you can’t resume where you were prior to when you turned off the wall switch.
If you follow me there, hopefully, that made sense. But anyway, I did see a great deal on some Phillips Hue light bulbs in the starter kit with the hub and so I decided to pick it up, and I set it up in my living room and my dining room and I got to say I’m very impressed.
Once you got it set up with the hub and it was actually very, very easy to set up. It was very straightforward and the instructions were very easy. It’s really, really neat the way that you can control the light now, just with your voice and I can change the color, and it’s fascinating because there are scenes with the Philips Hue Light, and what they do is they take the colors out of photographs.
It’s really, really neat the way that you can control the light now, just with your voice and I can change the color.

So if you’ve got a particular picture of a sunset that you love, you can actually use that picture as the source of colors. And then if you’ve got multiple light bulbs, it’ll now basically replicate the colors of that sunset photo in the colors that are in your living room or dining room or wherever you have these lights.
And of course, Philips Hue comes with some of these scenes built in, so they’ve got things like I think there was a tropical sunset. There was like a savannah sunset. I can’t remember off hand, but some really cool ones.
The northern lights, they’ve got a scene for that and I love it. And you can just adjust that with your voice. The only thing that I find a little bit of a limitation with it, is the fact that, the way it’s built in, there’s not a lot of functionality for having lights change on their own, on a pattern.
There are supplementary apps that you can download and put on your phone, and your mobile phone which will then allow you to have that, and to have the simulated movement and color changes of the lights. But nevertheless, I think it’s great. My kids are having a lot of fun, changing the lights by voice.
Right now it’s a bit of a novelty. We’ll see how it goes over the next couple of weeks and months and I’ll have to update you on that. But if you’re looking for, you know, some good colored lights, they are very, very good, I have to say.
They’re a little bit on the pricey side, but they’re worth checking out, particularly if you find them on sale. You can check out some more information about them at AlexainCanada.ca/Devices. Alright. So I will keep you updated on how the lighting goes in this home. Talk to you later.
