Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #271

Alright, it’s Teri here. And, I’ve got an announcement that I know a lot of people have been waiting for. Another feature that has been available in the states is now here in Canada, and specifically I’m talking about the “follow-up mode” And the follow-up mode is a mode that you can turn on per device, that allows Alexa to continue listening to you in such a way that you don’t have to repeat her name for another function. So you say something to Alexa and then she listens for a few seconds extra, for you to give another command, or ask another question, without having to say her name again.

So, if you have found yourself saying Alexa, and then something, and then Alexa, and then something. This is an opportunity for us not to have to do this anymore and I think it’s great. So finally it’s in Canada. How do you activate this? Well, you go into your Alexa app. Make sure you have updated your app, you need the latest version. Then you go, you click on the little hamburger icon, little menu icon in the top left. You click on settings. Then you click on device settings, and you click on the specific device that you want to enable this for, and when you click on that device, and you scroll down, you will see an area that says follow-up mode.

So, if you have found yourself saying Alexa, and then something, and then Alexa, and then something. This is an opportunity for us not to have to do this anymore and I think it’s great.

You simply click on that, and you toggle that on, and then you are set, and you’re good to go. Interestingly, when you click on the learn more button, it says that this will work unless there are certain circumstances that are occurring. And, so what that is, is, for example, if you’re playing music, the follow-up mode won’t be turned on. If you actually stopped the conversation by saying something like, stop, cancel, go to sleep, or thank you; it turns off the follow-up mode as well.

And if Alexa is not actually confident that you’re speaking to her, it won’t work as well. But it’s interesting. I actually find that quite interesting, that if you say thank you, it ends the conversation, just like the way you would with a person, right? You have a conversation… Okay. Thank you. So give it a try, and I’d love to hear what you think of the follow-up mode. Take care.
