Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #465

Hello and welcome to your flash briefing. It’s Teri Fisher here. And, I came across a really interesting article that I wanted to share with you. The article is titled, “Experts say, Canada lacks laws to tackle life and death problems posed by AI, things like Alexa.”

So what does this mean? Well, we all know that artificial intelligence devices, things like Alexa are becoming more and more prevalent in our society, and in fact, many more government bodies are using the AI algorithms to help them with the big data they’re collecting.

And there’s a quote in this article and it says, basically there’s this idea that machines will make all the decisions, and the humans will have nothing to say, and we’ll be ruled by some obscure black box somewhere.

So let me give you just a couple of examples. Since 2015 police departments in Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and London, Ontario, they have implemented or piloted what is known as predictive policing.

It kind of reminds me actually of that movie, Minority Report, with the precog, and you know, trying to solve crimes before they happen. Well, there is some element of this going on today.

There’s this idea that machines will make all the decisions, and the humans will have nothing to say.

Falling Behind in AI Laws

And, this is very interesting and it raises a lot of ethical questions. And I wanted to bring this to your attention because this isn’t so Sci-Fi anymore. These are things that we really need to start talking about.

And, the whole point of this article, is that it says that Canada is actually already falling behind in this area and that Canada actually lags behind the US and the EU on exploring AI regulation.

So, basically, this is raising lots of questions. If you didn’t get a chance to listen to the podcast yesterday, it’s a very, very timely podcast, because it actually gets into the ethical questions that arise around voice technology.

I had Brooke Hawkins on there as my guest, so definitely check that out. She’s a thought leader in voice ethics. You can access that at AlexainCanada.ca/79. So, lots of questions here, lots of things to wonder about.

And I really wanted to raise this issue to you, to our community so that we can start to have these discussions. Alright. Enjoy the podcast and I will talk to you again tomorrow.
