Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #270

Hey, it’s Teri Fisher here with your flash briefing. Now, if you have been following the smart speaker scene, you may know that the United States has been putting out a number of statistics and reports over the last couple of years looking at how these smart speakers have been adopted by users in the United States. And the data from Canada is a little bit lacking, but I just came across a study from the Consumer Technology Association which specifically talks about Canadians, and in fact, their headline says that more Canadians are embracing emerging technologies.

Smart speakers see exponential growth. And I just want to dive into that a little bit with you. And this is the 3rd annual consumer technology and ownership study for Canada. And just to kinda give you some perspective here, almost all Canadian households own a television; 93 percent. 86 percent own a smartphone, three-quarters (75 percent) own a notebook, a laptop or a netbook.

So us Canadians, we are excited about these emerging technologies. We’re excited about using these smart assistants to help us with our daily lives.

And, so those are the three top categories. But this is very interesting. Smart Speaker ownership grew 12 percentage points from 2017. It was 3 percent then, and it’s now 15 percent now. So, that is a huge jump, and in fact, that is the biggest jump out of all the categories in Canada right now. So us Canadians, we are excited about these emerging technologies. We’re excited about using these smart assistants to help us with our daily lives. And just to put this in perspective for you in terms of some other technologies that are around the same as smart speakers.

So we’re at 15 percent for smart speakers. 14 percent of Canadians own smartwatches, so we’re about on par with smartwatches. 13 percent own smart thermostats, and virtual reality headsets, 7 percent, although that’s up six points from 2017 as well. So really interesting. If the average Canadian is anything like me that I’m not surprised to hear this, and I think we’re going to continue to see a huge jump in the smart speakers going forward. Enjoy your day, talk to you again tomorrow.
