Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #257
So today’s Friday, November 2nd, and it’s Teri here with your flash briefing. Today I want to give you a quick update as it recently just became public. The announcements that Amazon made with regards to their third quarter. So if you are interested in the business side of Amazon, and the milestones that they have achieved over the last couple of months, this will be, I think very interesting to you. It’s certainly very interesting to me, and it just emphasizes the speed at which Amazon is continuing to develop and grow as a company. And, I’m going to state it right now. I think Amazon is going to take over the world, but here we go. So, these are some of the highlights of the third quarter. Probably the biggest one, the one that’s making the biggest headline right now is that their third-quarter sales are up 29% to $56.6 Billion for the last quarter.
And you can compare that to what was $43.7 Billion in the third quarter a year ago in 2017. So, pretty impressive. Some of the particular highlights that apply to Alexa, is, of course, they introduced a whole bunch of new products. We’ve talked a lot about that. Alexa is now available on over 20,000 devices, and, just a year ago, it was only about 3,500 brands. So, a huge, huge update there as well. No doubt.
I think Amazon is going to take over the world, but here we go.

One of the features that Amazon released that is helping with this massive expansion is the fact that there are new tools including an updated Alexa smart home skill API, and, the Alexa connect kit, which allows brands to essentially voice control any device and feature with Alexa if they want to build that in, and so, the Amazon microwave was the first device to have that built in. More as like I think a demo for other companies, of what you can do with Alexa, and then of course just as far as the artificial intelligence, there’s been a lot of scientific updates in Alexa’s ability.
They’ve added in some deep neural networks to advance Alexa’s ability to detect a challenging quote, acoustic phenomena such as a whispered speech, and the normalist events like glass breaking, so we can start to detect various types of sounds. Of course, they’re working on developing more languages, improve contextual understandings, and so on. So, it’s been an incredible couple of months here, and, there’s no sign of them slowing down. So, it will be interesting to see what the update is in another three months from now. Alright, enjoy our heading into the weekend, and we’ve got some fun commands for you tomorrow. Talk to you then.
