Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #452

Hey there. I hope you’re doing well. It’s Teri here, and today’s flash briefing is something that I personally find absolutely fascinating. This has to do with a technology called Lidar, and for those of you that may not be familiar with what Lidar is, Lidar is the technology that helps us to develop autonomous cars.

Lidar basically is a series of lasers that are used for range finding, effectively bouncing nonvisible light off objects, and then building up a cloud map, so that the object can then have an approximation of what is in its surroundings.

Basically, it is a computer technology form of sight, and the reason I’m bringing this up is that there are some researchers that are now looking at using this technology Lidar with Alexa, and imagine the capabilities of Alexa with eyes, being able to see.

I’ll give you some examples of things that I’ve been reading that potentially this technology may mean for us. So, one thing is, it could look for gestures.

So not only would you be able to speak to Alexa, but it could look to see if you are pointing, or swiping something, and this doesn’t necessarily have to be on a device. You could be swiping or drawing something on a wall, and it can observe and see what you are doing.

Imagine the capabilities of Alexa with eyes.

Alexa plus LIDAR equals Sight

Another thing that the Lidar technology can do, is it can have a sense of if a person is facing it, so imagine what that does if a person simply just turns to the device with Alexa, and now Alexa knows that you are facing it, and it is more likely that you are talking to Alexa, it’s like making eye contact with Alexa, which is fascinating.

Another example that I’ve read about is, using it for recipe skills so that the device is actually watching what you’re doing, and it sees if you’ve poured a certain amount of liquid from a measuring cup, and it knows if it’s ready to move on to the next step.

This is some really incredible technology, and now we’re being able to combine a voice technology potentially with sight technology. Now, this is all still being researched, but the way things are going, I cannot believe that this will not be available to us sometime in the next couple of years.

This is really, really, truly remarkable stuff. So, I’d love to hear your feedback on this. Hit me up on Twitter @DrTeriFisher and tell me what you think about this. I’d love to hear your ideas of applications for this technology. Okay. Talk to you tomorrow.
