Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #529
Alright, Teri here with your flash briefing for today. If you are at all concerned about privacy when you are using your Alexa device, you may be interested in a letter that was sent out by Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, in response to a letter from US Senator Chris Coons, about how long Amazon retains some of the voice recordings and transcripts.
And, I just want to tell you a few highlights of this letter. And essentially, this is the important part for you to realize.
Do we have the ability to delete our voice recordings? And the answer is yes, with the exception of a couple of things. And this is… these are the things that Amazon does retain.
And I’m just gonna read this, from the letter as a quote because it actually makes a lot of sense to me.
Do we have the ability to delete our voice recordings? And the answer is yes

I don’t… I personally don’t have a problem with this, but this is what it says, “Amazon may retain records of customers’ Alexa interactions, including records of actions Alexa took in response to the request. For example, when a customer subscribes to Amazon Music Unlimited, or places an Amazon Fresh order, or requests a car from Uber or Lyft, or orders a pizza, or makes an in-skill purchase, then the developer obviously needs to keep a record of that transaction, so that’s not going to get deleted. And for other types of Alexa requests, for example, setting a recurring alarm, asking Alexa to remind you of an anniversary, placing a meeting on your calendar, sending a message, we would not want… customers would not want or expect deletion of that recording to delete the underlying data that would prevent Alexa from performing that request to task.”
So, that makes sense to me. And, I don’t have any problem that at all. I mean, basically you’re getting Alexa to do a task for you and if you wanted Alexa to lead everything you’ve ever said to Alexa, then she wouldn’t be able to carry out those tasks.
So, I don’t have a problem with that. I’d love to hear what you think about that. Hit me up on Twitter @DrTeriFisher. Talk to you soon.
