Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #438
Hello and welcome to today’s flash briefing. It’s Teri Fisher here again. And, today’s flash briefing is specifically for those of you that might be a little bit concerned about your privacy when it comes to Alexa and your Amazon Echo devices.
As you may know, this has been in the news recently, the fact that Amazon has employees that take some of the information that is being transmitted, and that information is then being annotated and being used to further train Alexa and make her better.
Now, there’s nothing that unusual about that. AI devices need to be trained, but some people were concerned about whether or not their personal information could be accessed through this.
Well, what I want to tell you about today is an app that has been developed for Macs. If you have a Mac, this is a report by CBC news, and it’s a new Mac application developed by a group of researchers at Princeton University, and it allows you to essentially figure out what your smart devices in your home are doing in terms of transmitting information out to other people.
Some people were concerned about whether or not their personal information could be accessed through this.

So, just to be a little bit more specific about that. Princeton has developed this app. Now, this app is called the Princeton IoT Inspector, and they quote say, “Our smart devices are watching us, and it’s time for us to watch them.”
This app uses some technology that allows it to monitor the network activity of all the smart devices connected to your network. So, it reveals how active they are, it knows when you’re using them, when you’re not using them, and this means that if you want to know exactly, what your Echo device or Alexa is doing, you may be interested in installing this app.
Again, it’s called the Princeton IoT Inspector, and you can monitor what your Alexa device is doing. So check it out and if you’d give it a try and tell me, I’d love to hear how it’s working out for you. Again, hit me up on Twitter, @DrTeriFisher. Alright. Talk to you tomorrow.
